Breeding & Genetics

With generations of expertise, Stockyard delivers exceptional beef through meticulous selection of premium cattle genetics, ensuring unmatched flavour and marbling—a hallmark of our renowned quality.

Our genetics stem from the celebrated Wagyu bloodlines of Japan, revered for their exceptional marbling. We refine our breeding programs with performance data to craft some of the world’s finest and most consistent lines of cattle outside Japan.

At Kingsgate Station, nestled in New South Wales’ Northern Tablelands, we raise Wagyu fullblood and crossbred cattle amid lush pastures. Yet, with a three-year journey from conception to consumption, meeting demand alone isn’t possible. Which is why we partner with Australia’s finest breeders, forging trusted relationships to maintain a steady supply of premium beef.

Every step of our breeding and feeding is finely tuned through genetic analysis and benchmarking. Supported by DNA tracability and independent grading from AUS-MEAT and Meat Standards Australia, we ensure excellence in every cut, every time.

Nurturing on the farm

Founded on care that spans generations, we safeguard the future by tending to both our animals and the environment, with sustainability at our core.

Our Wagyu fullblood and crossbred cattle thrive in the untouched beauty of Kingsgate Station in New South Wales’ Northern Tablelands and Yea in Victoria’s High Country. These pristine landscapes, with open fields, fresh water, and natural shelter, allow our cattle to flourish. For Stockyard, it’s more than producing exceptional beef—it’s about respecting the land, nurturing every animal, and working in harmony with nature.

Kerwee, nestled across 1,280 hectares on Queensland’s Darling Downs, is the heart of Stockyard—a place where passion, care, and excellence come to life. This carefully chosen land, with its rich soils and access to the ancient Great Artesian Basin, provides fresh water and fertile pastures, creating the perfect environment for raising our Wagyu and Angus cattle to meet the standards of the world’s most discerning beef lovers.

"We feed carefully, slowly, a couple of times a day, every day. We ensure the cattle don’t want for anything. Over time the way our cattle develop and how the marbling develops, that’s what makes Stockyard unique."

Animal welfare

We’ve long been leading the pack in animal welfare, becoming one of the first Australian feedlots to provide shade across all our pens. With a hands-on approach to care and handling, we ensure our cattle flourish in an environment designed to give them the best life possible. Grounded in the five freedoms of animal welfare, our commitment is simple: happy, healthy cattle, every day.

Ethical feeding processes

Nutritionist-designed feed for peak marbling and wellbeing.

Our program is a testament to care and precision— with no growth hormones and 100% natural feed, free from antibiotics and using non-GMO ingredients. Designed exclusively for our Angus and Wagyu, it’s a carefully balanced blend of locally sourced steam-flaked wheat and barley, silage, straw, cereal hays, probiotics, molasses, and protein meals. Every quarter, independent testing ensures optimal nutrition and purity, guaranteeing every ingredient contributes to excellence.

From the ancient depths of the Great Artesian Basin, our cattle drink water as pure as the land itself. Drawn from 496m below the Earth’s surface, this freshwater undergoes regular mineral and bacterial testing, ensuring it remains as pristine as nature intended.

Under Stockyard’s AUS-MEAT verified "Natural Program", we uphold a promise of purity, ensuring our cattle are raised without growth hormones and are fed a ration free from antibiotics and using non-GMO ingredients. Locally grown wheat, barley, and silage form the foundation of a carefully crafted diet, designed to naturally nourish and sustain.
